Follow-on flight testing aims to include envelope expansion throughout the summer leading to <strong>fully autonomous flight<\/strong> \u201czero pilots\u201d in <strong>2020<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;<em>This technology brings a whole new dimension of safety, reliability and capability to existing and future helicopters and to those who depend on them to complete their missions &#8211;<\/em> said Chris Van Buiten, Vice President, Sikorsky Innovations -. <em>We&#8217;re excited to be transforming a once mechanically controlled aircraft into one with fly-by-wire controls. This flight demonstrates the next step in making optionally piloted \u2013 and optimally piloted \u2013 aircraft, a reality.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>This is the <strong>first full authority fly-by-wire retrofit kit<\/strong> developed by <strong>Sikorsky<\/strong> that has c<strong>ompletely removed mechanical flight controls <\/strong>from the <strong>aircraft<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Through <strong>DARPA<\/strong>&#8216;s <strong>Aircrew Labor In-Cockpit Automation System &#8211; ALIAS<\/strong> <strong>program<\/strong>, <strong>Sikorsky<\/strong> is developing an <strong>OPV approach<\/strong> it describes as <a href=\"https:\/\/c212.net\">pilot directed autonomy<\/a>\u00a0to give operators the confidence to <strong>fly aircraft safely<\/strong>, reliably and affordably in optimally piloted modes enabling flight with two, <strong>one or zero crew<\/strong>. The program aims to improve operator decision aiding for <strong>manned operations<\/strong> while also enabling both <strong>unmanned<\/strong> and <strong>reduced crew operations<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Sikorsky<\/strong> has been demonstrating its <a href=\"https:\/\/c212.net\/c\/link\/?t=0&amp;l=en&amp;o=2489368-1&amp;h=3952082522&amp;u=https%3A%2F%2Flockheedmartin.com%2Fen-us%2Fproducts%2Fsikorsky-matrix-technology.html&amp;a=MATRIX%E2%84%A2+Technology\">MATRIX\u2122 Technology<\/a>\u00a0on a modified <strong>S-76B\u2122<\/strong> called the <strong>Sikorsky Autonomy Research Aircraft &#8211; SARA<\/strong>. The aircraft, which has been in <strong>test since 2013<\/strong>, has more than <strong>300 hours of autonomous flight<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Sikorsky <a href=\"https:\/\/c212.net\/c\/link\/?t=0&amp;l=en&amp;o=2489368-1&amp;h=3700767381&amp;u=https%3A%2F%2Fnews.lockheedmartin.com%2F2019-03-05-Sikorsky-Introduces-S-92A-TM-and-S-92B-TM-Helicopters&amp;a=announced+in+March\">announced in March<\/a>\u00a0that its\u00a0<strong>S-92\u00ae helicopter fleet update <\/strong>will include the introduction of phase one <strong>MATRIX\u00a0Technology<\/strong> that will bring advanced computing power to the platform.
