{"id":5011,"date":"2019-06-27T03:30:50","date_gmt":"2019-06-27T02:30:50","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/spazio-news.it\/?p=5011"},"modified":"2019-06-17T10:41:48","modified_gmt":"2019-06-17T09:41:48","slug":"air-new-zealand-uses-drones-to-inspect-aircraft","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/spazio-news.it\/?p=5011","title":{"rendered":"AIR NEW ZEALAND USES DRONES TO INSPECT AIRCRAFT"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.airnewzealand.com\/\">Air New Zealand<\/a> has teamed up with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.stengg.com\/\">ST Engineering<\/a> to trial the use of <strong>drones to inspect aircraft<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.stengg.com\/\">ST Engineering\u2019s Aerospace<\/a> arm is the world\u2019s largest airframe <strong>MRO &#8211; Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul<\/strong> service provider with an extensive global network of facilities in the <strong>Americas<\/strong>, <strong>Asia<\/strong> <strong>Pacific<\/strong> and <strong>Europe<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The <strong>drone inspection trials Air New Zealand<\/strong> is collaborating on with <strong>ST Engineering<\/strong> take place at its facility next to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.changiairport.com\/\">Changi Airport in Singapore<\/a> where <strong>Air New Zealand aircraft <\/strong>undergo heavy maintenance checks.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cIncorporating innovative technologies into aviation MRO holds great potential in enhancing the way aircraft get serviced.\u00a0 We are happy to be working with our like-minded partner, Air New Zealand which shares the same motivation and belief as us in exploring the full potential of technologies to improve maintenance work<\/em> &#8211; Deputy President of ST Engineering\u2019s Aerospace sector Jeffrey Lam says at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.spazio-news.it\/\">Spazio-News Magazine<\/a> -. <em>We believe solutions such as DroScan will drive great value for the aviation industry given the huge emphasis it places on safety and efficiency, and we look forward to using it to great effects after we have completed the trials successfully with Air New Zealand.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>ST Engineering<\/strong> has developed an <strong>Unmanned Arial System \u2013 UAS<\/strong>, known as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.stengg.com\/\">DroScan<\/a>, which sees a <strong>drone<\/strong> <strong>take a planned route around the outside of an aircraft<\/strong> to <strong>inspect<\/strong> its <strong>surface<\/strong> and produce <strong>high definition images<\/strong>. These images are processed using a software with <strong>smart algorithms to detect and classify defects<\/strong>, which aircraft engineers can review and confirm, or carry out further inspection for defects if required.<\/p>\n<p>Air New Zealand Chief Ground Operations Officer Carrie Hurihanganui says the airline is committed to exploring new and innovative ways of operating \u2013 including in the aircraft engineering space.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cUsing a drone to inspect our aircraft will save time, taking around one to two hours, compared to up to six \u2013 depending on aircraft type \u2013 which means repairs can start sooner if needed, and our aircraft will be able to get back in the air more quickly. We\u2019ve trialed using DroScan on a number of our aircraft undergoing maintenance inspections in Singapore now and believe using a drone will also help improve inspection quality.\u00a0 In future, there may be an opportunity to use the device in New Zealand, for example to conduct ad hoc inspections after lightning strikes.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Air New Zealand has teamed up with ST Engineering to trial the use of drones to inspect aircraft.
