{"id":5520,"date":"2019-07-24T07:52:32","date_gmt":"2019-07-24T06:52:32","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/spazio-news.it\/?p=5520"},"modified":"2019-07-22T18:02:22","modified_gmt":"2019-07-22T17:02:22","slug":"lockheed-ball-kratos-team-on-advanced-phased-array","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/spazio-news.it\/?p=5520","title":{"rendered":"LOCKHEED, BALL &#038; KRATOS TEAM ON ADVANCED PHASED ARRAY"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.lockheedmartin.com\">Lockheed Martin<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ball.com\">Ball Aerospace<\/a>, and<a href=\"http:\/\/www.kratosdefense.com\"> Kratos Defense &amp; Security Solutions<\/a>, were awarded a $<strong>7.2 million prototype agreement<\/strong> by the <strong>Defense Innovation Unit<\/strong> to develop a new <strong>Multi-Band, Multi-Mission &#8211; MBMM<\/strong> prototype <strong>phased array<\/strong> as part of a broader initiative to modernize the existing <strong>Air Force Satellite Control Network<\/strong> and bring new technology faster to warfighters. <strong>MBMM enables multiple<\/strong> <strong>satellites<\/strong> to simultaneously connect with a single array antenna over multiple frequencies, a significant performance improvement compared to traditional single contact parabolic dishes.<\/p>\n<p>The <strong>Lockheed<\/strong> team is building prototype transmit and receive E<strong>lectronically Steerable Arrays &#8211; ESA<\/strong>. Each array uses Ball\u2019s advanced phased array technologies and supports <strong>L-<\/strong> and <strong>S-band<\/strong> <strong>frequencies<\/strong> initially. Signal processing is accomplished with <strong>Kratos\u2019<\/strong> <strong>digital intermediate frequency &#8211; IF technology<\/strong> and cloud-enabled <strong>quantumRadio<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cMBMM is a smarter way to quickly and affordably scale satellite transmission while lowering long-term maintenance costs for the Air Force<\/em> \u2013 said to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.spazio-news.it\/\">Spazio-News Magazine<\/a> Maria Demaree, vice president and general manager of Lockheed Martin Mission Solutions -. <em>Today, when a parabolic antenna goes down, it can take days to repair; with MBMM, it will take hours and won\u2019t take the entire site offline \u2013 that\u2019s a tremendous advantage.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Extensive industry research comparing the costs of <strong>parabolic antennas<\/strong> to phased arrays over time show that while parabolic antennas have a lower upfront cost, they become much more expensive to maintain. <strong>Phased arrays avoid<\/strong> the mechanical maintenance and keyhole effects of parabolic antennas while providing graceful degradation and electronic agility in matching <strong>aperture<\/strong> <strong>performance<\/strong> to <strong>constellation<\/strong> demands.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cOne electronically steered antenna can replace multiple dishes, enabling better performance, connectivity and affordability &#8211; <\/em>said Rob Freedman, vice president and general manager, Tactical Solutions, Ball Aerospace -.<\/p>\n<p>Future <strong>operational MBMM systems<\/strong> will offer new cyber resilience while reducing long-term sustainment costs for the Air Force. <strong>MBMM<\/strong> may eventually support multiple orbits from <strong>LEO<\/strong> to <strong>GEO<\/strong> and can perform <strong>multiple missions<\/strong> at the same time, including <strong>command &amp; control<\/strong> (C2), <strong>launch pad<\/strong> and <strong>ascent operations<\/strong>, <strong>radar<\/strong> and <strong>mission data transmission<\/strong>.
