It will now be transported to <strong>Russia<\/strong> for its acceptance review, followed by integration onto the <strong>Kazachok Surface Platform<\/strong>, scheduled for launch this time next year.<\/p>\n<p>At about 8 x 8 x 20 cm plus a trio of <strong>antennas<\/strong>, <strong>ESA\u2019s Lander Radioscience experiment<\/strong> &#8211; <strong>LaRa<\/strong> is a bit bigger than a 1-litre milk carton. But it functions as a <strong>high-performing transponder<\/strong>, tasked with maintaining an extremely stable direct radio-frequency link between <strong>Earth<\/strong> &#8211; <strong>Mars<\/strong> for a full martian year, two Earth years, once <strong>ExoMars<\/strong> has touched down.<\/p>\n<p>Proposed by the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/lara.oma.be\">Royal Observatory of Belgium<\/a>, <strong>LaRa<\/strong> has been developed through ESA\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.esa.int\/About_Us\/Welcome_to_ESA\/PRODEX\">PRODEX programme<\/a>, focused on developing <strong>science experiments for space<\/strong>, and funded by the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.belspo.be\/belspo\/space\/index_en.stm\">Belgian Space Policy Office<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cThe instrument\u2019s surfaces are regularly swabbed to check its \u2018bioburden\u2019 levels remain acceptable &#8211; <\/em>explains to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.spazio-news.it\/\">Spazio-News Magazine<\/a> <strong>Lieven Thomassen of LaRa prime contractor Antwerp Space<\/strong> -. <em>Its interior, made up of four levels of circuit boards, has already undergone full cleaning. It is all but fully sealed away from the outside world, with only a 2 mm diameter venting hole to avoid over-pressurising \u00a0once LaRa reaches space.\u201d <\/em><\/p>\n<p>The latest testing of <strong>LaRa<\/strong> took place in ESA\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.esa.int\/Our_Activities\/Space_Engineering_Technology\/Mechanical_Systems_Laboratory2\">Mechanical Systems Laboratory &#8211; MSL<\/a>\u00a0at the Agency\u2019s <strong>ESTEC<\/strong> technical heart in Noordwijk, the Netherlands. This is a small-scale version of the adjacent <strong>ESTEC Test Centre<\/strong>, able to perform a wide range of <strong>space-simulating tests<\/strong>, but serving <strong>spacecraft instruments<\/strong>, <strong>subsystems<\/strong> or <strong>mini-satellites<\/strong> rather than <strong>full-size missions<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Following vibration testing on one of the <strong>MSL<\/strong> shaker to simulate the harsh conditions of launch, <strong>atmosphere re-entry<\/strong>, descent and <strong>Mars<\/strong> <strong>landing<\/strong>, <strong>LaRa<\/strong> was then placed inside a thermal vacuum chamber for nearly two weeks to perform <strong>functional testing<\/strong> in <strong>hot<\/strong> and <strong>cold<\/strong> <strong>conditions<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>It was at first placed in high vacuum to \u2018outgas\u2019 fumes that might otherwise pose problems in space and to test its behaviour in conditions similar to that of the voyage to <strong>Mars<\/strong>. <strong>LaRa<\/strong> was then subjected to simulated <strong>martian conditions<\/strong>, with <strong>6 millibars<\/strong> <strong>of carbon dioxide<\/strong> added to the chamber, at the same time as the temperature was cycled up and down.<\/p>\n<p>LaRa\u2019s electronic box will be kept warm by the <strong>ExoMars lander<\/strong>\u2019s heater. <strong>LaRa\u2019s antennas<\/strong> however are installed outside of this thermally controlled environment and will have to endure extreme <strong>temperature cycling<\/strong>: nights as cold as -90\u00b0C, with daytime reaching up to a relatively comfortable 10\u00b0C. The resulting novel antenna design was\u00a0developed in cooperation between <strong>ESA<\/strong> &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/uclouvain.be\">Universit\u00e9 Catholique de Louvain<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>At the end of testing the thermal vacuum chamber was opened. Engineers approached the instrument wearing mouth masks, gowns and sterile gloves, resembling a hospital surgical team, then proceeded to remove the sensors and cabling fitted for the testing before placing the instrument and its antennas into sterile bags.<\/p>\n<p>Like all hardware designed for interplanetary missions, LaRa is subject to strict <a href=\"http:\/\/www.esa.int\/Our_Activities\/Space_Engineering_Technology\/Planetary_protection_preventing_microbes_hitchhiking_to_space\">planetary protection<\/a>\u00a0protocols to prevent microbial contamination.<\/p>\n<p>LaRa is one of two ESA instruments on the Russian-built <a href=\"http:\/\/www.esa.int\/Our_Activities\/Human_and_Robotic_Exploration\/Exploration\/ExoMars\/ExoMars_landing_platform_arrives_in_Europe_with_a_name\">ExoMars Surface Platform<\/a>. Known as Kazachok, the platform\u2019s first role is to get itself and the <strong>ESA-made<\/strong> <strong>Rosalind Franklin ExoMars<\/strong> <strong>rover<\/strong> <strong>safely<\/strong> down to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.esa.int\/Our_Activities\/Human_and_Robotic_Exploration\/Exploration\/ExoMars\/Oxia_Planum_favoured_for_ExoMars_surface_mission\">Oxia Planum lowlands<\/a> on Mars.<\/p>\n<p>Then, once the rover drives off its ramps, <strong>Kazachok<\/strong> will devote itself to running a total of <a href=\"http:\/\/exploration.esa.int\/mars\/56933-exomars-2020-surface-platform\/\">13 experiment packages aboard<\/a>.
