We see <strong>technology<\/strong> as enhancing what our people can do, allowing them to keep pace with the \u2018<strong>more, faster, better<\/strong>\u2019 demands of our growing customer base. Demand for <strong>global shipping services<\/strong> is growing fast, and we have to <strong>innovate<\/strong> to stay competitive. <strong>New technologies,<\/strong> <strong>new ideas<\/strong> and <strong>new services<\/strong> empower growth and spur <strong>job <\/strong>creation.<\/em><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>How can technology support the shipping market and why does UPS look at the world of drones?<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><em><strong>UPS<\/strong> believes <strong>autonomous technologies,<\/strong> including <strong>drones,<\/strong> can solve a critical need in <strong>humanitarian logistics<\/strong> and crisis response to overcome the <strong>difficulties of safely<\/strong> reaching people in need with <strong>medicine<\/strong> and<strong> life-saving supplies<\/strong>: for example, we are part of a project to deliver blood by drone to r<strong>emote locations<\/strong> in <strong>Rwanda<\/strong> and <strong>Ghana;<\/strong> we have also tested the use of drones to <strong>deliver medical supplies<\/strong> to hard-to-reach places; and we conducted a test in the <strong>Boston<\/strong> area, successfully <strong>delivering medical supplies<\/strong> to an <strong>island<\/strong> in a faster and more efficient manner than otherwise possible.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>We strongly believe that the <strong>use of drones<\/strong> will create efficiencies in our <strong>network.<\/strong> We\u2019re committed to using <strong>technology<\/strong> to transform the way we do <strong>business.<\/strong> UPS\u2019s formation of a <strong>drone delivery company<\/strong> and our application to begin <strong>regular operations<\/strong> under this level of <strong>certification<\/strong> is historic for <strong>UPS<\/strong> and for the drone and <strong>logistics industries,<\/strong> overall.<\/em><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>Have you already chosen which company and\/or drone will support you in this revolution?<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><em>We announced in July this year that we\u2019ve established our own drone subsidiary, <a href=\"http:\/\/spazio-news.it\/usa-consegne-con-i-droni-nasce-ups-flight-forward\">UPS Flight Forward<\/a>, to develop and operate <strong>unmanned aerial systems<\/strong> for revenue-generating <strong>deliveries.<\/strong> At the same time, UPS partnered with <strong>drone-maker<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/pressroom.ups.com\/pressroom\/ContentDetailsViewer.page?ConceptType=PressReleases&amp;id=1553546776652-986&amp;WT.mc_id=PRESSRELEASE_PRESSROOM_135_MATTERNET_093019\">Matternet<\/a> to launch our <strong>healthcare delivery service<\/strong> on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wakemed.org\">WakeMed campus in North Carolina<\/a> (USA).<\/em><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>When can we realistically receive deliveries from the sky and what will change for the customer?<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><em>We see the use of any n<strong>ew technology<\/strong> as a way to better serve our <strong>customers.<\/strong> We are taking the deployment and use of drones one step at a time, identifying <strong>specific opportunities<\/strong> and <strong>customers<\/strong> that can <strong>benefit<\/strong> today from a <strong>customized drone delivery service<\/strong>. A good example of this is when we established our groundbreaking <strong>logistics program<\/strong> to <strong>deliver medical<\/strong> samples via the <a href=\"https:\/\/mttr.net\/product\">Matternet unmanned drone platform<\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>In conclusion, what other technologies are you experimenting within UPS and what should we expect for the future?<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><em><strong>Artificial intelligence<\/strong>, <strong>Virtual Reality<\/strong>, <strong>Augmented Reality<\/strong>, <strong>robotics, automation,<\/strong> <strong>alternative fuels<\/strong>, <strong>route optimization algorithms<\/strong>. You name it. We\u2019re exploring it. We are pioneers in <strong>advanced analytics<\/strong>.
